THE EVENT RECOGNIZED THE CELEBRATED VETERAN CALYPSONIAN’S DECADES-LONG CONTRIBUTION TO SAINT LUCIAN MUSIC AND CULTURE.
On Monday, December 30th, the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) hosted a special plaque and honorarium presentation ceremony for the legendary Saint Lucian calypsonian, Herman “De Ashanti” Hippolyte. This heartfelt tribute marked the conclusion of "MIZIK: A Celebration of Our Musicians," an event produced by the CDF to commemorate Saint Cecilia's Day, traditionally celebrated as the Feast of Musicians.
Herman “De Ashanti” Hippolyte, an icon of Saint Lucian calypso, was honoured during a brief yet poignant ceremony at the Cultural Development Foundation or CDF headquarters. The event recognised his decades-long contribution to Saint Lucian music and culture. "MIZIK: A Celebration of Our Musicians," held on November 23rd at the National Cultural Centre, was the centrepiece of the Saint Cecilia’s Day celebrations. It featured performances by veteran artists and emerging stars, who paid tribute to De Ashanti’s extensive and influential catalogue of music.
Kendal John, the recently appointed Communications Director for the CDF, emphasised the significance of dedicating the inaugural "MIZIK" event to this living cultural icon.
As a gesture of appreciation, the CDF presented De Ashanti with a commemorative plaque and an honorarium. The foundation hopes to establish "MIZIK" as a staple on Saint Lucia's cultural calendar, celebrating the contributions of musicians to the island’s rich heritage.
